Goh Ballet Dancers Earn Top International Awards
A pair of 15 year-old dancers have earned the top two spots at the Wein Welt Wettbewerb international ballet and contemporary dance competition in Vienna this past week. The competition saw Michelle Khoo take home the gold, with Chihiro Abe taking home silver in the impressive medal haul.

David Suzuki’s Blue Dot Tour Picks Up Stream
David Suzuki’s Blue Dot Tour continues to gain attention as they prepare for the coast-to-coast journey from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Victoria, B.C this fall. The goal of the tour is to gain public exposure to environmental concerns over clean air, water, and land. The roster boasts and impressive line-up of established artists including Neil Young, FeistBarenaked Ladies, Margaret Atwood, Grimes, Danny Michel, Bruce Cockburn, Robert Bateman, and Shane Koyczan among others.

Vancouver Celebrates Queer Art
The Queer Arts Festival entered its second week in Vancouver running up until Aug. 9th. The festival celebrates the best in visual and performing arts from the LGBT community. This year’s festival once again coincides with Vancouver Pride Week, which wraps up this weekend with their annual parade.

 

BC Music Festival Bans Headdresses
Bass Coast Music Festival running this weekend in Merritt, BC, has taken a hard line against cultural appropriation by banning the iconic First Nations symbol. The festival organizers decided on an outright ban of the controversial piece in a show of respect, as the event also takes place on indigenous land.

 

Canada Post Honours Country Music Stars
Canada Post released a set of five new stamps honouring Canadian country stars Shania Twain, k.d. lang, Hank Snow, Tommy Hunter, and Renée Martel. The stamps are available both as booklets for regular use, and as limited edition prints for enthusiasts.
