\nWorld Premiere of Indigenous-Led Stage Production for Young Audiences in

Immersive performance experience, based on the award-winning novel of the same name, features theatre, large-scale puppetry, and live orchestral music in an original coming-of-age story about identity, belonging, and connection

Toronto, ON \u2014 <\/b>Red Sky Performance<\/b> (RSP)<\/b> and the <\/span>Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO)<\/b> present the world premiere of <\/span>She Holds Up the Stars<\/i><\/b>, <\/span><\/i>commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in associatio<\/span>n with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, TO<\/span> Live, and the National Arts Centre\u2019s National Creation Fund, on stage at <\/span>Roy Thomson Hall<\/b> on <\/span>April 19, 2026 at 1:30pm and 4pm, with school shows on stage April 13 – 18, 2026. <\/b>She Holds Up the Stars<\/span><\/i> is an original, story-based performance written, created, and directed by <\/span>Sandra Laronde,<\/b> based on her award-winning young adult novel of the same name. The multidisciplinary production brings together a contemporary Indigenous story, theatre, puppetry, and live orchestral music to create an immersive and deeply moving experience for audiences of all ages, exploring themes of identity, belonging, and relationship to land.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was first writing <\/span>She Holds Up the Stars<\/span><\/i>, I knew that I didn\u2019t want the words to only sit on the page; I wanted them to lift, to move, to breathe and to be embodied,\u201d says Laronde. \u201cThis production weaves storytelling, movement, music, visual design\u2013and even life-sized puppets\u2013into a bold hybrid that centres an Indigenous girl\u2019s inner life\u2013her intelligence, emotional depth, humour, and relationship to land and family. I want young people, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to see themselves authentically reflected in this story, and to recognize that their lives hold beauty, complexity, and\u2013most of all\u2013possibility.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

She Holds Up the Stars<\/span><\/i> follows a young Indigenous girl searching for her mother\u2019s truth. Through an unexpected bond with a spirited horse, she finds courage and resilience in a world shaped by beauty, cruelty, and the deep pull of land and family. Published by Annick Press in 2023, <\/span>She Holds Up the Stars<\/span><\/i> is the winner of the Horace Mann Upstander Award and named one of CBC Books\u2019 Best Canadian Books for Young Adults.<\/span><\/p>\n

The story was inspired by Laronde\u2019s own experience as an Indigenous girl from the Teme-Augama Anishinaabe (People of the Deep Water) in <\/span>northeastern Ontario, who longed for stories by Indigenous writers that reflected her cultural roots, love of the land, and inner life of a sensitive young person navigating a complex world.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Adds Laronde: \u201cI grew up with a deep connection to land that I wanted to explore in <\/span>She Holds Up the Stars<\/span><\/i>. The story speaks to kinship and relationship to the environment, not ownership. By inviting audiences of all ages to experience the land as alive and relational, the work encourages care and stewardship rooted in respect. I want audiences to feel this relationship as a source of deep joy.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

In developing the stage production, Laronde partnered with award-winning UK puppet designer <\/span>Nick Barnes<\/b> to create a strikingly beautiful life-sized horse puppet, bringing the creature\u2019s fantastical spirit to the stage. Three performers will embody the horse\u2013<\/span>Troy Feldman<\/b> (heart), <\/span>Brad Cook<\/b> (hind), and <\/span>Dayna Tietzan<\/b> (head)\u2013moving together as a single entity, working through shared breath, rhythm, and intricate physical expression. As a counterbalance to the horse’s powerful stage presence, <\/span>She Holds Up the Stars<\/span><\/i> will also feature an energetic and joyful puppy, puppeteered by <\/span>Jainee Fernandez<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The performance fea<\/span>tures an original orchestral score by longtime RSP and TSO collaborator, composer <\/span>Eliot Britton<\/b>, and will be performed by TSO members, under the baton of Conductor <\/span>Trevor Wilson<\/b>, complemented by the pre-recorded vocals of <\/span>Jen Brousseau <\/b>and<\/span> Don Kavanaugh.\u00a0<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

Grounded in Indigenous spatial traditions that emphasize relationship and shared presence, t<\/span>he TSO<\/span> will appear on stage in an unconventional configuration, with the conductor facing the audience, and the orchestra sitting three-quarters turned. The result promises a dynamic, three-dimensional performance environment where music, movement, and story can seamlessly coexist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
