Bard on the Beach Celebrates 25th Anniversary
Vancouver Shakespeare festival, Bard on the Beach entered the second week of its 25th anniversary season. This year’s festival will feature A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest, Cymbeline, Equivocation, and a special performance by founding member Christopher Gaze sharing some of the best stories over Bard’s history.
VSO Names New Composer in Residence
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra has named Jocelyn Morlock as its next composer in residence to succeed Bramwell Tovey. The UBC grad will be the first woman to hold the position and caps off a remarkable year, which also saw her receive two nominations in the Western Canadian Music Awards.
J.K. Rowling Releases New Novel
J.K. Rowling’s latest novel, The Silkworm hit stores this week on June 19. Rowling’s releases have become an international event as arguably the world’s most well known author. Although best recognized for her Harry Potter series, her latest mystery thriller marks her third effort aimed at the adult audience.
Vancouver International Jazz Festival Kicks Off
The Vancouver international Jazz Festival kicks off tonight at venues across the city. The festival has been hosting world-class jazz musicians annually since its humble beginning in 1986.
Polaris Music Prize Long List Announced
The Polaris Music Prize announced it’s long list of the top 40 Canadian albums of the past year. The award modeled after the UK’s Mercury Prize is awarded strictly on artistic merit with no correlation to album sales as is the case with many others. This year’s diverse list features Arcade Fire, The Sadies, Cowboy Junkies, Shad, Chad VanGaalen, Tanya Tagaq, and Chromeo.
