Ballet Kelowna: Twilight

Ballet Kelowna Unveils Intricate Layers of Love & Connection in
– Twilight –

Exquisite mixed program showcases two world premieres from top emerging choreographers & a company premiere from dance luminary Joe Laughlin

Kelowna, BCBallet Kelowna contemplates love and connection to people and places with the expressive and moving mixed program Twilight, presented at the Kelowna Community Theatre on February 14 & 15, 2020 at 7:30pm. A diverse and rigorous collection of contemporary and classical works, Twilight features world premieres from two of Canada’s most buzz worthy emerging choreographers — As it is, a contemporary piece by choreographer Eva Kolarova exploring ideas of loneliness and separation, and the urgency to form relationships with others; and Within the Golden Raga, an elegant balletic work by choreographer Kunal Ranchod. The program will also showcase the dynamic company premiere of on wings by the revered, three-time Ballet Kelowna collaborator and choreographer Joe Laughlin, exploring the fleeting torments of love.

“With Twilight, audiences will be guided on a spiritual and emotional journey, exploring the multi-faceted qualities of love and relationship in its many forms,” says Ballet Kelowna’s Artistic Director and CEO Simone Orlando. “Featuring new works by some of Canada’s most celebrated new dance talents, as well as the introduction to a moving piece first performed by Ballet BC, Ballet Kelowna continues to play a vital role in the development of Canadian choreographic talent by offering commissions to both emerging and established artists.”

A highly accomplished and intelligent dancer, Kolarova has garnered critical acclaim for her choreography, which has ranged from intimate duets to large ensemble pieces. In the world premiere of As it is, Kolarova’s first commissioned work for Ballet Kelowna, the Montreal-based contemporary artist explores the interplay between isolation and interconnectedness as it relates to a sense of place, belonging, and experiencing intimacy with others. Through evocative and vulnerable movement, As it is plays upon the notion of space as a function of relationship — how we relate to ourselves, the world, and others through the space and energy that is both within and all around us.

Born in the Czech Republic, Kolarova’s intense pursuit of her craft led her to study dance in Switzerland and Germany, from the early age of 14. After many years abroad as a touring dancer, she settled in Montreal and later formed Kolarova Danse in 2015, where she draws upon her nomadic experiences to inform her choreography. A rising star, Kolarova has presented original works at festivals around the world, earning accolades such as Best Choreography at the Daegu International Choreography Festival in South Korea in 2018.

In the world premiere of Within the Golden Raga, Montreal choreographer Ranchod will showcase the depth of Ballet Kelowna’s technical brilliance in a classical yet inventive balletic piece. Featuring fast petit allegro sections, complex pointe work, and intimate duets, Ranchod’s first company commission is a spiritually informed study of connection to people and place, inspired by the duality of his Indian heritage and Canadian upbringing. Set to a stunning musical score composed by genre-defying sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar, Ranchod’s rich choreography explores the juxtaposition between the intricate rhythms, patterns, and structures of traditional Indian classical music and the poised shape and line of classical ballet. Within the Golden Raga will engage audiences in a fresh and unexpected perspective on identity, and reflect upon spiritual love and connection of a shared culture and community.

A graduate of Ryerson University’s Theatre School and École supérieure de ballet du Québec, Ranchod has rapidly gained momentum as a choreographer to watch, creating works for The Luminato Festival, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, The National Film Board of Canada, and most recently, The National Ballet of Canada’s CreativAction program, which shares the company’s resources to develop Canadian choreographic talent. While creating the concept and movement vocabulary of Within the Golden Raga as part of The National Ballet of Canada program, Ranchod was commissioned by Ballet Kelowna to fully realize his vision as a feature-length work in Twilight.

Ballet Kelowna’s elite athleticism and technical prowess will continue to shine in the company premiere of on wings, the fourth work by legendary Canadian choreographer Laughlin to enter Ballet Kelowna’s repertoire. Previous works include Butterfly Effect, Double Variations (co-choreographed with Simone Orlando), and L’Etiquette. Originally commissioned by Ballet BC, Laughlin’s on wings captures the romantic rush of a classical ballet in this intimate work for nine dancers where he plays “subtly with classic partnering, undercutting it with contemporary attitude, both in gesture and ideas about the fleeting torments of love” (The Georgia Straight). Featuring virtuosic lifts, highly technical pointe work, and breathtaking partnering, Laughlin’s dramatic choreography reflects the turbulent intensity of the musical score, set to Alexander Scriabin’s darkly passionate and emotionally charged Piano Sonata #1 in F Minor.

Laughlin is the founding Artistic Director of Joe Ink and has created 14 productions for his company, in addition to many works commissioned by numerous arts organizations, including the Canada Dance Festival, National Arts Centre, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and Ballet BC. His repertoire has been performed in Canada, U.S., UK, Europe, South Africa, and South Korea. He is the recipient of many accolades, including the Banff Centre’s Clifford E. Lee Award and the BC Isadora Award for excellence in choreography.
